The Kiev Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1898, was the first polytechnic institute in the Russian Empire. The construction of 6 buildings of the university in the Romanesque style, designed by architect I. Kitner on 39 hectares, was completed in 1901. Today the National Technical University of Ukraine "KPI" is one of the largest in Europe and the CIS.
