Monasteries and Cathedrals

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery

It was founded in the first third of the 14th c. In 1919 the monastery was closed; its buildings were used for a variety of needs. In 1958 a museum was opened in the monastery. Divine services were resumed in 1989. In 2004, the Russian Orthodox Church took over it.

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery. The Trinity Cathedral

It was built in 1650-1652 on the site of the old temple, which had been destroyed by the explosion of gunpowder in the basement. The walls are covered with frescoes by G. Nikitin and S. Savin. In 1756-1758, a five-levelled iconostasis was built.

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery. The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin

The cathedral was built on the site of the dilapidated temple of the 16th c. in 1860-1864 by architect K. A. Ton. It was closed in 1922. Then the building housed an anti-religious museum. It was blown up in 1930. Currently, work is underway to restore the cathedral to its original form.

The Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery. The Sacristy

It was located in the Trinity Cathedral. In 1913, the collection was transferred to the Palace of the Romanov boyars. After 1917, all the values were nationalized. Some of them were removed to Moscow, the others remained in the museums of Kostroma.

The Theophany Convent

The monastery was founded in the 15th c. In 1863 it became a convent. It was closed in 1918 and revived in 1990. Currently, the Theophany Convent is the location of the Fedorovskaya Icon of the God’s Mother, a shrine of the Romanov dynasty.

It was built in the mid 16th c. on the left bank of the Volga and rebuilt several times. Demolished in 1930s, along with other buildings of the Kostroma Kremlin.

The cathedral was built in 1645-1650. It was located next to the fence of the Theophany Convent. It was destroyed in 1935.

The only Posad church of the 17th c. preserved in Kostroma. It was built no later than 1652.

Wooden Architecture

In the Hypatian suburb of Kostroma there is the Kostroma Architectural-Ethnographic and Landscape Museum-Reserve "Kostroma Sloboda", founded in 1958. The museum’s territory houses about 30 monuments (religious buildings, houses, farm buildings), transported from different parts of Kostroma Region. The gem of the museum was the Church of Transfiguration from Spas-Vezhi village, which burned in 2002.
