Restoration Department was established at the museum-reserve in 1925 with the arrival in Novgorod of a restorer of paintings from the Russian Museum, Nikita Davydov. Currently, the department comprises nine workshops, specializing in restoration of icons, wooden sculpture, oil and tempera paintings, textiles, metals, ceramics, glass and other materials. In late 2014, on the basis of the restoration workshop of monumental painting of the Novgorod Museum and the "Fresco" restoration workshop, which became part of the museum in 2012, a branch under the name of the "Center for Monumental Painting Restoration" was organized. During the period of restoration of monumental paintings, the Novgorod school of restorers developed its own method of restoring the ruined frescoes.
