On May 22 (June 2), 1784, by decree of Empress Catherine II, the Olonets governorate was established as a province. The administrative center of the governorship became Petrozavodsk which received the status of a provincial city.
May 21 (June 2), 1842, in St. Petersburg was born Nikolai Karlovich Schilder, a military engineer, lieutenant-general, director of the Imperial Public Library, who gained fame as the author of historical works and publisher.
On February 12 1955 the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union together with the USSR Council of Ministers for missile test and space technology research passed a joint resolution on foundation of the Scientific-Research Test Range No. 5 of the Soviet Defence Ministry (NIIP № 5).
