Open lectures of the Presidential Library timed to the 150th anniversary of the University Statute adoption

25 September 2013

September 25, 2013 the Presidential Library will hold the first video lecture in this school year timed to the 150th anniversary of the University Statute adoption.

Scholars and historians from St. Petersburg and Moscow will start speaking at 10.00 a.m. Moscow time. The addresses will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s website live.

The lectures will consider the importance of the adoption of the University Statute in 1863 - the legal document of the Russian Empire which regulated the arrangement and order in the universities. Among the Great Reforms of 1860-1870's the Statue was prominent as it allowed bringing the system of Russian higher education in line with the requirements of the time. It replaced the 1835 Statute and streamlined the organization and curricula of faculties, granted extended rights of self-government to the universities (rector, dean and professors now were to be elected).

Considerable attention during the university reform was given to the system of legal education, as at the same time judicial reform was being worked out, finally implemented in 1864. Both reforms were elaborated with the involvement of the public and received wide coverage on the pages of periodicals. The result of university reform was the expansion of the autonomy of universities, the creation of more favorable conditions for research and studies, the increase motivation and commitment of teachers and students to engage in science.

Public lectures will be attended by students of St. Petersburg universities, experts of the Committee on Youth Policy of the Leningrad Region, the Internet audience. Representatives of the Tyumen branch of the Presidential Library, the Omsk regional center of the Tula State Pedagogical University and the Southern Federal University will join them through video-conferencing.
