Museum of Defense and Blockade of Leningrad development to be discussed at the Presidential Library

29 April 2014

On the eve of Victory Day, April 28-29, 2014, the Presidential Library will host the International scientific and practical conference "Link of Times: War and Its Reflection in a Modern Museum timed to the 70th anniversary of foundation of a unique museum. The conference will bring together academics, workers of museums, archives and libraries, professors and members of the community.

The event was organized under the support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg. It is planned to discuss the issues that will define the concept and principles of development of the exhibition at the State Memorial Museum of Defense and Blockade of Leningrad.

Defense of Leningrad Museum, opened April 30, 1944, was abolished in 1949 in connection with the "Leningrad affair." Before the closing, the museum, so significant for St. Petersburg, which represented one of the most tragic and heroic pages of the national history, occupied more than 40, 000 square meters of showrooms in Smolyanoy Lane. But after its recreation in 1989, it was much pressed down into squares. Today, the museum has completely exhausted its possibilities for development in the provided premises.

Collection of artifacts is constantly increasing, new technologies appear but there are no possibilities for their implementation. That is why the Presidential Library, in cooperation with the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Historical Society, hosts the conference.

The first Russian national electronic library focuses on the development of cooperation with the Museum of Defense and Blockade of Leningrad. On the 70th anniversary of Victory, the Presidential Library and the Museum plan to implement a joint electronic project, which tells the story of people and children, who stayed in the besieged city.
