The Presidential Library will screen and discuss “Freak of the imagination. Gaito Gazdanov” documentary

On April 28, 2017, at 3 pm the Presidential Library will conduct a screening and discussion of the documentary entitled “Freak of the imagination. Gaito Gazdanov.”

Produced by the Nart-Art studio movie is featuring an outstanding writer, 20th-century philosopher, emigrant, member of the French Resistance movement, Ossete by origin, Russian by birth, French by his citizenship - Gaito Ivanovich Gazdanov (1903-1971).

The hour-long film was created on the basis of reliable evidence and archival documents, restoring the life and creative way of Gazdanov. A need for creation a documentary about a personality of the émigré writer raised from the growing research interest in current learning process of Gazdanov. The author and director Rafael Gasparyants and the operator Mikhail Nemyssky worked on the creation of the movie. It is assumed that at the next in turn scheduled session of the Cinema Club there will be a producer of the movie of Temina Tuaeva (Vladikavkaz).

The film has drawn the life and creative path of Gaito Gazdanov, which guided him as an emigrant across many countries and continents. He was born in St. Petersburg, but a large group of Caucasian relatives considered him theirs own. In 1919, at the age of sixteen, Gaito entered the Volunteer Army of Wrangel, fought in the Crimea. During the retreat of the army Gazdanov was first in Gallipoli, then - in Constantinople. The first story of Gaito entitled “The Hotel of the Future” was written there.

In 1923 Gazdanov arrived in Paris and remain there for thirteen years without leaving. He has done any work to make a living: a loader, a locomotive washer, a worker at the Citroen car factory, for many years he was a taxi driver. Four out of the nine novels and twenty-eight out of the thirty-seven stories were written in Paris. The rest took the next thirty years.
