Internet and history: New version of the portal “Calendar of Victory” launched

On the eve of the Victory Day was launched a new version of the portal “Calendar of Victory”.

The project "Calendar of Victory" is crucial to developing a holistic picture of the Great Patriotic War and is designed for anyone interested in history and historical geography, regional studies, documentation and folk art.

The website became more modern, dynamic and convenient. In addition to appearance, and functional changes affected component Calendar of Victory. When creating a new version was developed and applied modern technology solutions, allowing greatly expand the functionality of the portal.

The main functional changes were on the main page - now it is not only the updated slider with releases there, but also geo-information system in the form of card coated with a layer of information and labels.

Along with standard Google maps user can view maps in several modes: historical, contemporary or satellite. In addition to fairly standard functionality of all mapping services in this system is the mode in which the historical military maps, digitized specifically for this project, a separate layer are superimposed on a modern map with the exact combination that provides great opportunities for research. Map has full screen mode for greater convenience with high-quality scan images of military maps.

In addition to the map on the main page is added another new unit - a timeline with applied releases in the form of intervals, which in addition to navigating in the issues clearly represents the chronology of battles in different parts of the front and their duration.

The changes also touched upon issues of content. The new design made navigation on the issue and its study more clear, simple and convenient. The structure of issues has been preserved, each of them consists of several sections: "military operation", "Destiny and deeds", "Jokes and cartoons", "History of the Internet", "Do you know?", allowing to consider the events of those years under different perspectives and perhaps feel the spirit of the time.

The project "Calendar of Victory" is implemented be specialists of the “Electronic Archive” Corporation  which, together with museums, archives and libraries are involved in the search for the little-known and unknown to the general public information about the fighting on the Soviet-German front. As part of the project it is carried out a lot of work on search and processing huge amounts of information.
