The USSR flag hoisted on the western peak of Elbrus instead of the Nazi banner during the Battle of the Caucasus

13 February 1943

On February 13, 1943 during the counter-offensive of Soviet troops in the Battle of the Caucasus, a group of Soviet climbers led by N. A. Gusak removed the Nazi banner and standards of the 1st Wehrmacht Mountain Division “Edelweiss” from the western peak of Elbrus, hoisting the USSR flag in their place. On February 17, a group of climbers led by A. M. Gusev planted the Soviet flag on the eastern peak.

The First Kuban (Ice March) Campaign of the Volunteer Army began

The First Kuban Campaign of the Volunteer Army, which also went down in history under the name “Ice March”, took place from February 9 (22), 1918, when the army fought a retreat from Rostov-on-Don, to April 30 (May 13), 1918 - by this time the volunteer units had returned to Don Region. The campaign was caused by an active offensive by the Red Guard troops, accompanied by the reluctance of the Don Cossacks to fight against the Bolsheviks, which led to the capture of Rostov by Soviet troops on February 23 and Novocherkassk on February 25.

Алексей Арсентьевич Рогожин родился 23 февраля 1922 г. в семье рабочего в городе Тобольске. В 1927 г. он переехал с родителями в Тюмень, а затем в Тулу. Окончив 9 классов школы, учился в школе ФЗО, после которой работал слесарем на оружейном заводе в Туле. После сдачи нормативов и зачётов вступил в Осоавиахим. Одновременно с работой на заводе проходил обучение в Тульском авиаклубе под руководством В. С. Гризодубовой, получившей звание Героя Советского Союза за знаменитый перелёт на Дальний Восток.
