The Brest Fortress is a monument of defense architecture of the 19th century. It is located in the western part of Brest. It was erected in the middle of the 19th century on the site of the ancient settlement of Brest-Litovsk. The important military-strategic position of Brest-Litovsk in the west of Russia determined the choice of its place for the construction of the fortress. It was built according to the design of engineer-general KI Opperman. It was opened on April 26, 1842. The total area of ​​all fortifications is 4 km \\ u00B2, the length of the main fortress line is 6.4 km. June 22, 1941, the garrison of the fortress was one of the first to take the blow of the German fascist invaders. Every day defenders of the fortress had to beat 7-8 attacks, flamethrowers were used. The organized defense of the fortress lasted almost a month. For the fortitude of the defenders of the Brest Fortress and in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, on May 8, 1965 the Brest Fortress was awarded the honorary title "Hero Fortress". Since 1971 it is a memorial complex. The memorial "Brest Hero Fortress" was designed by a creative group led by sculptor A. P. Kibalnikov. In a single architectural and artistic ensemble of the memorial are the ruins of the old fortress, the sites of battles, monumental sculptural compositions: the main entrance to the complex, the main monument "Courage" and the Eternal Fire in front of him, the sculpture "Thirst", the Ceremony Square, 1022 people, bayonet-obelisk. On June 22, 2011, the sculptural composition "Heroes of the border, women and children with their courage in immortality stepped" .
