Naval Victories of Russian Fleet at Cape of Gangut and Grengam

7 August 1714

On July 27 (August 7) took place two glorious victories of the Russian Fleet — naval battles with Swedish fleet at Cape Gangut (Hanko) (1714) and at Grengam (Granhamn) (1720). In memory of the Battle of Gangut, Russia celebrates the day of its military glory on August 9 - the Day of the First Naval Victory of the Russian Fleet under the command of Peter the Great over the Swedes at Cape Gangut in 1714.
 

The Land Noble Cadet Corps set up in Saint Petersburg

9 August 1731

An imperial decree “On establishment of Cadet Corps” regarding the foundation of the first Cadet Corps in Russia, prepared by General Fieldmarshal Münnich, was  adopted on July 29 (August 9) 1731.

USSR entered the war with Japan

9 August 1945

In accordance with the agreements reached at the Yalta and Potsdam Conferences by the leaders of the three countries of the Anti-Hitler Coalition (Great Britain, the USSR, and the USA), the Soviet Union, on August 9, 1945, entered the war against Japan in order to end the last remaining conflict of World War II.
