The Astrakhan Revolt

10 August 1705

July 30 (August 10) 1705, in Astrakhan, broke out a major popular uprising against the introduction by Peter I of new taxes and duties. The driving force behind the uprising was Streltsy, exiled by the tsar from Moscow after the Streltsy Uprising in 1698. The reason for the revolt was repressions, arbitrary extortions, and brutal methods of the Astrakhan governor, Timofei of Rzhev in implementing the tsar's ban on wearing Russian dress and beard.

The Peace Treaty of Orekhovets (Treaty of Nöteborg) was signed

12 August 1323

On August 12 1323 at the fortress Orekhovets (Swedish: Nöteborg) after 30 years of military actions the  Treaty of Orekhovets (Treaty of Nöteborg) was signed between the Novgorod Republic and the Kingdom of Sweden, and it was for the first time that the demarcation of the territories between Russia and Sweden was made.

Russian Air Force Day

12 August 2006

On August 12,  the Day of the Russian Air Force is celebrated, which was established by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation in 1997. Until 2006, this holiday was celebrated on the third Sunday of August. However, by the Decree of the President dated May 31st, 2006, Air Force Day became an annual celebration on August 12th and was given the status of a commemorative day.

Nikolayevsky Post on Amur founded

13 August 1850

On August 1 (13) 1850 the Russian navigator Gennady Ivanovich Nevelskoy founded the first military administrative settlement — Nikolayevsky Post, located on the Amur River, which later grew into the city of Nikolayevsk-on-Amur.

The Peace Treaty of Värälä

14 August 1790

On August, 3 (14), 1790, in the village of Värälä, on Kumen River, in the region of the modern town of Kouvola in Finland, Russia and Sweden signed a treaty which concluded the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790.

The Battle of Novi

15 August 1799

4 (15) August 1799, in Italy, near the town of Novi took place the largest battle between the combined Russian and Austrian troops under the command of Field Marshal Alexander Suvorov (about 65, 000 men), and the French army (38, 000 men), under the command of General B. K. Joubert.

Don Cossack Kozma Kryuchkov - first St. George cavalier of First World War

15 August 1914

By Order No. 17 of the 1st Army dated August 2 (15), 1914, the St. George Cross of the 4th degree was awarded to Kozma Kryuchkov, commander of the 6th sotnia of the 3rd Don Cossack Regiment, for his actions during the war. On the 12th day of the conflict, Kryuchkov led a patrol of four horsemen and attacked a German patrol of 22 soldiers, overturning them and inflicting 16 wounds on the enemy. The hero's bravery was recognized by General of Cavalry Pavel von Rennenkampf, who personally presented him with the award.
