Russia and Khiva concluded Hendemian Treaty

24 August 1873

On August 12 (24), 1873 in Khiva Khan’s summer residence, the garden of Hendemian, Governor General of Turkestan K. P. Fon Kauffmann and Seid-Muhammad Rahim Bahadur-Khan II signed a treaty between Russia and Khanate of Khiva.

Lyaoyan battle began

On August 11 (24), 1904 near the city of Layoyan (North-Eastern China) one of the largest battles of Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905 began.

Birth of Andrey Dmitriyevich Frolov, Participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union

24 August 1917

Andrey Dmitriyevich Frolov was born on August 24, 1917 in Ik village (currently, Vikulovsky District of Tyumen Region) in a peasant family. After completing 7 years of school, he worked as a tractor driver at a machine and tractor station. In 1938, he was recruited to the Red Army for urgent service. He underwent training in the regimental school of junior commanders. During the Great Patriotic War, he was in the active army since the summer of 1941. He fought in the 7th Separate Army, on the Karelian and 2nd Belorussian Fronts. He was twice injured and once contused. He distinguished himself on the Karelian Front, in polar region, during the Petsamo-Kirkenes offensive.

(Konstantin Friedrich Peter) of Oldenburg, Duke, General of Infantry (1841), Chairman of the St. Petersburg Supervisory Board (from 1844), Chief of the IV Office of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery for institutions of Empress Maria (1860-1881), Senator (1834-1838), member of the State Council (1836).
 

Russian-Bulgarian Army wins the Shipka Battle

26 August 1877

14 (26) August 1877, during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878, the joint Russian-Bulgarian Army under the command of the Russian generals F. F. Radetsky and N. G. Stoletov, won Shipka Pass in the Balkan, having repulsed the persistent attacks of the Turkish army led by Suleiman Pasha. The Battle of Shipka was the decisive one in the history of the liberation war for independence of Bulgaria.
 

The first Soviet atom bomb was tested

August 29, 1949 at 7 a.m. Moscow time on Semipalatinsk training test site № 2 under the Ministry of the Armed Forces was successfully tested the first Soviet atomic bomb RDS-1.
 

The Northern War began

By the beginning of 1700 in Europe anti-Sweden coalition called the Northern Alliance had formed. It included Russia (Peter I), Denmark (Frederick IV), Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Saxony (Augustus II the Strong).
