March 25 (April 5), 1713, is considered the official date of the establishing of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. On that day, the wooden Annunciation Church was solemnly consecrated in the presence of Peter the Great. The site for the monastery was chosen by the sovereign himself. The legend states that Prince Alexander Nevsky defeated the Swedes in the Battle of the Neva in 1240 at this place at the mouth of the Chernaya Rechka (now the Monastyrka River).
The Monument to Alexander Nevsky in Saint-Petersburg was solemnly unveiled on May 9, 2002, marking the 300th anniversary of the city (sculptors V. G. Kozenyuk, A. A. Palmin, A. S. Charkin; architects G. S. Peichev and V. V. Popov).
