Presidential Library mark Russian Cinema Day
45 years ago, in 1980, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established an official holiday – Soviet Cinema Day. The name of the holiday has changed several times. In different years, it was celebrated as Cinema Day and Russian Cinema Day. In 2001, it was decided that the professional holiday, Russian Cinema Day, dedicated to everyone involved in cinema, would be celebrated annually on 27 August.
Presidential Library marks anniversary of victory in Battle of Kursk
23 August 2025 marks the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi forces by Soviet troops in the Battle of Kursk. This day is officially declared Military Glory Day in Russia. In July-August 1943, one of the largest battles of the Great Patriotic War unfolded in the area of Oryol, Kursk, Belgorod, and Kharkov.
Russian Federation National Flag Day. Presidential Library marks history of holiday
22 August 2025 marks Russian Federation Flag Day in our country. On this day in 1991, the white-blue-red tricolour was raised above the Government House on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment in Moscow, replacing the red Soviet flag that had flown over the country since 1918.
Great Russia Project tells about first person to read manuscripts of ancient Mayan civilisation
Fifty years ago, in 1975, Yuri Valentinovich Knorozov published his monograph "Hieroglyphic Manuscripts of the Maya." For this work, which became a scientific and cultural sensation around the world, its author was awarded the USSR State Prize. The most amazing thing is that the scientist was able to decipher the writings of a mysterious civilisation without ever having been to Mexico! In the USSR, his achievements were compared to the successes in space exploration. Information about the life and work of Yuri Knorozov, as well as details about his discovery, can be found in the section "Outstanding Scientists and Inventors" of the "Great Russia" project implemented by the Presidential Library.
New additions to Presidential Library's collection. First hundred years of photography in Russia
19 August marks World Photography Day. In anticipation of this date, the Presidential Library invites readers to learn with the book Essays on the History of Photography in the USSR, which has recently been added to the institution's collection. The publication tells the story of the first steps of the greatest invention of the 19th century.
Presidential Library tells History of Creation of Bronze Horseman
On 7 August (18 August according to the new calendar) 1782, a monument to the founder of the city, Emperor Peter I, was unveiled on Senate Square in St. Petersburg. Later, thanks to Alexander Pushkin's famous poem, the sculpture was named "The Bronze Horseman," although it is actually made of bronze.

Presidential Library tells about history of Staraya Ladoga, first capital of Rus
15 August is the Day of Staraya Ladoga, the first capital of Russia. Here the Russian statehood was born, the world trade routes "from Varangians to Greeks" and "from Varangians to Arabs" passed by, the great cultures of the East and the West met, here the founder of the ruling dynasty of Ancient Russia Rurik started his way and here, according to the Novgorod Chronicle, Prophetic Oleg, Rurik's successor, was buried.
Presidential Library participates in Third Russian-Chinese Library Forum
The Presidential Library participated in the Third Russian-Chinese Library Forum, which is being held on 14 August 2025 at the Pashkov House of the Russian State Library as part of the cross-cultural Years of Culture between Russia and China. The main theme of this year's forum is "Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage: The Experience of Two Countries."
Presidential Library marking 70th anniversary of St. Petersburg Metro
In 1955, the first line of the Leningrad Metro was opened. The first train travelled from Avtovo station to Ploschad Vosstaniya.
