Presidential Library highlights competition and monopolies in St. Petersburg

15–25 March 2019

A multimedia exhibition “Competition and Monopolies in St. Petersburg. From the Empire to Presents Days” will be open in the Presidential Library from March 15, 2019 to March 25, 2019. The exhibition has been organized by the Presidential Library and the Department of Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia in St. Petersburg.

The event is timed to coincide with the 15th anniversary of establishment of the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia.

Historical facts about trusts, syndicates and cartels complemented by the information about the activities of St. Petersburg monopolists and economic entities nowadays - this all will help exhibition visitors learn more about the attitude towards competition in Russia and in St. Petersburg.

Library guests will have a chance to study excerpts from unique documents, which cast light on the history of antimonopoly regulation from 1845.

Documents from the Presidential Library’s collections give some insight into controversial aspects of a complex process of development of the national legislation in the field of protection of competition, which took place in the early 20th century, known as the golden age of monopolies in Russia.

Colourful advertising posters will also illustrate the course of time. Violations of the law “On Advertising” might be found  in many of them today.
