On September 8 (20), 1802 by the Manifest of Alexander I ‘About the establishment of Ministries’ instead of former boards there were formed 8 ministries in Russia: the Ministry of Military-Land forces, of Military-Navy forces, of Foreign Affairs, of Justice, of Commerce, of Public education, of Finance and of Internal Affairs.

On August 11 1920 in Riga Latvia and RSFSR signed a Peace Treaty, which declared Independence of Latvia. The Treaty of Riga fixed the Soviet-Latvian border, and stipulated the establishment of diplomatic and consular relations between two countries.

On February 13, 1943 during the counter-offensive of Soviet troops in the Battle of the Caucasus, a group of Soviet climbers led by N. A. Gusak removed the Nazi banner and standards of the 1st Wehrmacht Mountain Division “Edelweiss” from the western peak of Elbrus, hoisting the USSR flag in their place. On February 17, a group of climbers led by A. M. Gusev planted the Soviet flag on the eastern peak.

The Mikhailovsky Palace, Hall No. 54 (The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg) presents a new exposition of historical paintings. Instead of the famous painting by I. Repin “Ceremonial Meeting of the State Council ...”, which is currently on display in the Tretyakov Gallery, visitors will have a chance to see pictures by artists of the 2nd half of the 19th century, which spotlight the history of pre-Petrine Russia. Earlier these works were rarely displayed as part of temporary exhibitions....
