History of Russian railways based on the Presidential Library’s materials

Traditionally, on the first Sunday of August, this year - the 2nd, Russia celebrates the Day of the Railwayman - a professional holiday which honors employees of the railway industry. The Presidential Library’s portal contains a large number of rare materials devoted to the development of this type of transport in Russia - electronic copies of rare publications, historical documents, atlases and photographs, video lectures and documentaries on this topic.

Foundation of the Russian State Library

The history of the Russian State Library begins with a collection of books, manuscripts, paintings and maps that belonged to the diplomat, chancellor, chairman of the State Council Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev (1754–1826). After the death of the count, the collection formed the basis of the Rumyantsev Museum in St. Petersburg, established by personal decree of Emperor Nicholas I on March 22 (April 3), 1828.

World War II in archival documents (collection of digitized archival documents, film and photo materials)

On May 13, 2025 more than 250 documents from the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation for the period from April 14, 1942 to May 11, 1945 have been added to the World War II in Archival Documents collection on the portal of the Presidential Library.

February 19 (March 3), 1843 in Penza, was born Nikolai Stepanovich Tagantsev, the largest national criminologist, senator, privy councilor and a member of the State Council of the Russian Empire, an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1917).

Yakov Petrovich Polonsky was born on December 6 (18), 1819, in Ryazan. The poet's father, Pyotr Grigorievich Polonsky, was a clerk in the office of Ryazan Governor-General A. D. Balashov. In 1819, he married Natalya Yakovlevna Kaftyreva, a descendant of an ancient noble family. Yakov Petrovich Polonsky was the eldest child in the family.
