Presidential Library presents childhood memories of the siege
21 February 2019
Lyudmila Zemskova, the resident of St. Petersburg, was among hundreds of people, who responded to the call of the Presidential Library to share documents about the siege. Her grandmother's sister, Valentina Lyubova, who was a head teacher at school No. 105 in Leningrad all through the war, wrote a memoir of heroism of teachers and kept safe the essays that schoolchildren wrote in the besieged city.

June 12 marks Russia Day in our country. It was on this day in 1990 that the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the RSFSR adopted the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Russia, which proclaimed the primacy of the Constitution of Russia and its laws. The status of a state holiday was assigned to this day in 1994. Since 1998, the holiday has been called Russia Day, but received this new name officially only in 2002.

January 12, 1943 "Iskra" “blinded” fascists. This was the name of one of the most famous operations of the Red Army and the Navy during the Great Patriotic War breaking the Siege of Leningrad. On this day, the Soviet fighters struck the first crushing blow to the occupier’s steel ring. The complete series of the events of almost 900 terrible days of the siege of the city on the Neva is presented in a special digital collection of the Presidential Library "Defence and Siege of Leningrad".
