Archives: Oral history of American Art to be preserved

As part of the federal “Save America’s Treasures” initiative to preserve significant historic properties and collections, the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art has been awarded a grant of $250,000 for the preservation and digitization of the Archives’ Oral History Collection, one of the oldest, most-consulted and historically significant oral-history collections in the country.

On November 2, 2018 the Museum of Victory (Moscow) is presenting a new exhibition entitled “Preserved relics”. The exhibition showcases over 400 exhibits, which come from different regions of Russia. These are personal possessions, household items, photographs and documents, which give an insight into important milestones in the history of the country.

206 years ago, September 7 (August 26, in the Julian calendar) of 1812, the famous Battle of Borodino took place. From the historical essay "The Battle of Borodino August 26, 1812" published on the Presidential Library portal, you can find out that Napoleon called it "the battle of giants". In turn, in "The Battle of Borodino" book of 1861, I. P. Liprandi mentions about "a gigantic battle that does not represent another similar since the invention of firearms".

An updated exhibition "Summer cottage area of Tsaritsyno" has opened in the building of the Third Cavalry Corps at Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve (Moscow). The exposition which focuses on the history of the popular countryside and its inhabitants from the 1860s up to the revolution, now features a lot of new rare exhibits, acquired by the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve specially for this exhibition.

On November 14, 2018 the Mayakovsky Library (St. Petersburg, Dutch Church Building, Nevsky Prospekt, 20) is staging a new exhibition “Reuse. Redevelop and Design. How the Dutch Deal with Heritage”, which focuses on innovative ways to redevelop and reuse historical buildings and complexes. Projects on display were designed and implemented by the Dutch in the Netherlands and other countries of the world – Russia, Germany, the USA, Italy and China.

The retrospective exposition, which will be open until March 15, 2020, traces the history of the theatre life in Ivanovo from the first Ivanovo-Voznesensk Theatre, which was founded by Vasily Demidov in 1873 to the epoch of the Ivanovo Public Youth Music and Poetry Theatre-Studio under the direction of Regina Grinberg.

The expanded exposition of the Museum of Collectors began working in the restored building of one of the Cavalry Houses of the Peterhof Museum Reserve. The exhibition tells about the history and traditions of Russian gathering. Originating at the turn of the XVII-XVIII centuries, it passed from the fashionable "sovereign's fun" to planned activity based on a scientific approach.
