The first and only meeting of Pushkin and Derzhavin occurred January 20, 1815 (January 8, Old Style) at the Lyceum exam, where Derzhavin was invited. He arrived to Tsarskoye Selo from his mansion on Fontanka River, and, according to the recollections of eyewitnesses, young Pushkin was reading his ode "Memories of Tsarskoye Selo", standing a few steps from the venerable poet. Pushkin made a strong impression on Derzhavin. "Soon the world will know another Derzhavin: it will be Pushkin, who has outdone all the writers already at the Lyceum," he said to S. T. Aksakov.
