World history: New exhibition “Eastern issue and protection of coreligionists» runs at the Museum of the History of Religion

28 June 2018

The State Museum of the History of Religion (St. Petersburg) is launching an exhibition “Eastern issue and protection of coreligionists” (people of the same faith), which spotlights the political, historical and religious collisions over «the Eastern issue» and the role of the Russian Empire.

"The Eastern issue" is the historical term for the political confrontation between the late 18th century and early 20th century in the Middle East, on the one hand, the struggle of the Balkan and Middle Eastern peoples for the liberation from the Ottoman rule, on the other hand - the rivalry between the great European powers for the territory of the disintegrating Ottoman Empire. One of the highlights of this  "matter" was the protection of the Christian people, who were under the rule of adherents of a different faith.
