Regions of Russia: Exhibition «Old Astrakhan. From the history of archaeological exploration of the city» to open in Astrakhan Local History Museum

In mid. July the Astrakhan Local History Museum is launching a new exhibition «Old Astrakhan. From the history of archaeological exploration of the city». The exhibition will showcase unique archaeological finds discovered on the site of the regional center over the last century.

«Old Astrakhan» exhibition highlights the 460th anniversary of the regional center.

On display are household items, coins, décor elements of monumental buildings of the capital of  Astrakhan Khanate – the city of Hajji Tarkhan. Alexander Spitsyn, member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission was the first who studied the area thoroughly in 1893. In 1913 a Swedish archaeologist, Director of the National Museum of Stockholm - Ture Arne - worked here.

Important archaeological exploration of the Astrakhan Kremlin conducted by Yury Vasilyev, Yelena Khvorostova, Tatyana Grechkina, Dmitry Vasilyev in the late 20th – early 21st cc. provide an insight into all the stages of the historical past of the city’s largest monument – from the time of the Golden Horde up to the 18th century.

Visitors will see the finds which date back to the time of the Golden Horde, unearthed by archaeologists in the Kremlin area, and learn about the way of life of the first residents of the Russian city of Astrakhan, founded in 1558.
