History and Culture: Photographs of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s family put on display in St. Petersburg

28 November 2019

The exhibition “Colour of Time. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Family in the Photographs of Maximilian Steinberg and Vladimir Rimsky-Korsakov” will be open at the Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Memorial Apartment and Museum until October 18, 2020.

Maximilian Steinberg was a talented composer, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s favourite student, who married the composer’s younger daughter Nadezhda. He was a man of many talents. The exceptional quality of his photographs made between 1908 and 1919 is amazing. This collection of photographs is the only remaining documentary source, which provides evidence of the appearance of the Rimsky-Korsakov Estate at Lyubensk that was almost destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. The exhibition, which is co-organized by the Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, showcases the collection of photographs that belonged to composer’s descendants. The complete collection has been put on display for the first time.
