
Museums of Russia: The Moscow Kremlin Museums to hold a contest for the best name of a new building
The Moscow Kremlin Museums hold a contest for the best name of a new building on the Red Square.
The new museum complex will be located in the former Middle Trading Rows, constructed in 1889–1893 and designed by architect Roman Ivanovich Klein. It will house the collections that now are showcased at the Kremlin Armoury, as well as collections from the depositaries. It will present Byzantine antiquities, Carl Faberge's Works, collections of ancient Russian art and Russian art of the XVI-XVII centuries, a collection of banners and much more. A separate hall will feature the court culture of the XVIII century. During the Kremlin Armory restoration, a collection of state regalia will move to the Red Square. Two large exhibition halls for temporary expositions will be opened in new areas. Besides the exhibition spaces, the museum complex will house modern conference rooms, a lecture hall, a children's center, recreation areas, cafes, and shops. The museum, with a total area of more than 80,000 square meters, will be adapted to visitors with disabilities.
The contest was announced on March 10, 2020. It is marking the day (March 10, 1806) when the Armory Workshop and Chamber received the status of a museum by the decree of Emperor Alexander I. The construction of a new museum complex on the Red Square, 5, will be finished in 2021. It will enter the Moscow Kremlin Museums according to the order of the President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin of February 24, 2015.
The competition is held online in three stages:
1. Acceptance of materials will run until April 15, 2020.
2. The choice of materials will run until May 15, 2020.
3. Winners will be announced on May 18, 2020, during the International Museum Day.
The contest invites to participate in adults and teenagers over 14 years old.
