1 October 2020

The State Public Historical Library (Moscow) launched an exhibition "Life Is Given Only to a Word", presenting Ivan Bunin's lifetime editions and autographs from the library collections.

Marking the 150th anniversary of Ivan Bunin (1870–1953) - writer and Nobel Prize laureate in literature, the library presents a unique collection of his books and autographs.

The exposition begins with the significant lifetime editions of Ivan Bunin: the first book of prose "To the Edge of the World and Other Stories" (Saint-Petersburg, 1897), the poetry collection "Falling Leaves" (Moscow, 1901), which along with his translation of H. Longfellow's "The Song of Hiawatha" won the Pushkin Prize in 1903; the first "Complete Works" (Petrograd, 1915) and others.

The next section showcases the diaries and letters of the "singer of autumn, sadness and noble estates". It is devoted to the writer's library that has not survived. The circle of Bunin's literary interests is represented by books he loved from childhood and the publications he read shortly before his death.

The exposition also includes the writer's unpublished and little-known autographs addressed to the members of the Karzinkin-Teleshov family.

The exhibition enters the program of the general festive events celebrating the 150th anniversary of Ivan Bunin. It will run until October 9.
