Society and Culture: "Arctic" photo exhibition from the collections of the Multimedia Art Museum opened in Murmansk

26 February 2021

An "Arctic" exhibition from the collections of the Multimedia Art Museum (Moscow) was opened in the branch of the Murmansk Regional Art Museum "Cultural and Exhibition Centre of the State Russian Museum".

The exhibition of art photography entitled "Arctic" spotlights the mission of the SS Smolensk to rescue the SS Chelyuskin (February 28 - June 7, 1934); the arrival of the airship Graf Zeppelin in Leningrad on July 25, 1931; an air expedition to the North Pole on March 21, 1937.

The photographs were taken by Vladislav Mikosha - Soviet cameraman, documentary filmmaker, screenwriter, photographer, front-line journalist, publicist, People's Artist of the USSR, winner of the Stalin and USSR State Prizes. The author created a significant part of the material for the Heroes of the Arctic documentary (1934), as well as a unique photo diary of the SS Smolensk mission to rescue the crew of the SS Chelyuskin. The ultimate sincerity and drama of black-and-white documentary images impress more than modern art photographs.

The exposition features three photo series. Performed by the same author, they reveal the same concept, characters and events.

The exposition presents only a small part of Vladislav Mikosha's extensive photo archive. It is just the beginning of the "discovery" of this author, a new representation of his creative way.

The exhibition will run until March 21, 2021.
