Internet and Science: Website with a virtual tour around the ice camp of the International Polar Expedition for the Study of the Arctic Climate launched

8 August 2021

The scientific data of the international MOSAiC expedition will be available to the general public. The virtual research laboratory will allow scientists around the world to explore unique information about the Arctic online.

The large-scale MOSAiC expedition lasted about 12 months, in 2019–2020. It is a project by the Alfred Wegener German Institute for Polar and Marine Research. Scientists from two dozen countries travelled on board the icebreaker "Polarstern". They carried out studies of the physical processes of the Arctic climate system under the program of the MOSAiC International Expedition. For a whole year, scientists have studied climate change in the Arctic and current ice formation.

Scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (Saint-Petersburg) took part in the expedition. Russian scientific expedition ships Akademik Fyodorov and Akademik Tryoshnikov and the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn were involved in several operations.

Anyone has an opportunity to look at life in a camp on ice, scientific equipment and feel an atmosphere of a polar expedition. The website provides the full immersion, available in VR glasses
