Memorable dates of Russia: Events devoted to the 300th anniversary of the proclamation of Russia as an empire to hold in St. Petersburg

2 November 2021

On November 2, 2021, Peter and Paul Fortress and Troitskaya Square will host celebrations devoted to the 300th anniversary of the proclamation of Russia as an empire. The events program arranged by the Russian Historical Society and the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg includes a church service, solemn ceremonies, an exhibition opening and a scientific conference.

Three centuries ago, on October 22, 1721 (November 2 according to a new style) in the Trinity Cathedral on Troitskaya Square in St. Petersburg, Tsar Peter I took the title of "Great, Father of the Fatherland, Emperor of All Russia", and Russia was proclaimed an empire.

The proclamation of Russia as an empire marked a significant change in the international position of the state. The recognition of the imperial title of the Russian monarch by the leading powers meant the recognition of Russia as one of the leaders of world politics.

An exhibition "Double-headed Eagle. The Symbol of Russian Statehood" will be opened in Peter and Paul Fortress.

Also, an online Scientific and Practical Conference "Marking the 300th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Russia as an Empire. Symbols and Meanings in a Historical Perspective" will be held on November 2-3.
