13 July 2022

The exhibition Panorama of the Great Battle, timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of one of the largest existing panoramas in the world The Defeat of the Nazi Troops near Stalingrad, was opened in the Museum-Reserve on July 8, 2022.

The project tells about the history of the creation of the grandiose battle canvas, the largest in the country, by artists of the M. B. Grekov studio. Its creation was preceded by a huge preparatory work. Painters studied archival materials, met with participants of the event, drew more than two thousand sketches of various genres – landscapes, portraits, genre scenes. The grand opening of the panorama was attended by veterans of the battle on the Volga, the famous sniper Vasily Grigoryevich Zaitsev among them.

The exposition features previously unexhibited sketches, a ribbon cut on the opening day of the panorama and signed by the artists, a symbolic key given by the builders to the then Director Anatoly Ivankin, photographs that captured the creation process, and other interesting exhibits.
