History and Culture: The exhibition “The Journey of Icon Masterpieces. Greek Icons and Engravings of the XVII – XIX centuries” presented in the Museum of the History of Religion in St. Petersburg
The State Museum of the History of Religion (St. Petersburg) presents an exhibition, where it broaches the subject of the post-Byzantine culture for the first time in 90 years of its history and reveals Greek icons and engravings from its collections.
The exposition features about 50 icons. The main section of the exhibition is based on Cretan monuments of the XVII century complemented by Russian icons, replicating iconographic styles developed by the remarkable masters of the Cretan tradition. A special section of the exhibition showcases icons of Athos and Northern Greece of the XVII-XIX centuries. The third section features monuments of the so-called “Greek world”: Serbia, Bulgaria, Near East and Russia. The exposition of icons is complemented by engravings, made on the order of Athos monasteries in Vienna and Venice, or minted on the Holy Mountain itself (the main part of the collection of Greek engravings is demonstrated in the multimedia format).
The diversity of icon masterpieces and the intersection of traditions in the post-Byzantine iconography and engravings of the XVIII-XIX centuries are presented at the exhibition. Most of the icons are exhibited for the first time.
The exhibition will run until September 11, 2022.
