Internet and Society: The Discover Moscow portal tells about the toponymy and architecture of Moscow streets
The Department of Cultural Heritage of the City of Moscow has prepared three online routes, dedicated to the toponymy of city streets and districts. They are available on the Discover Moscow portal. Through them, it is possible to take an exciting stroll around central streets of the capital. Each one will take no more than two hours. In this time, users will explore dozens of city sights: old mansions and manors, architectural street ensembles of the historical centre. The portal features not only detailed descriptions of every location, included in the routes, but photographs as well.
“Our new online routes will tell about the origins of the names of streets and alleys in Arbat and Khamovniki Districts, will help to see marks of centuries ago on Povarskaya Street, will show in which houses famous historical figures, science and art workers, people who greatly contributed to the development of Moscow lived. All routes have been created together with accredited guides and include both interesting facts and urban stories”, – Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage Alexei Yemelyanov stated.
The first route invites guests to take a stroll around Arbat District. The second route helps to explore Khamovniki District. The third route is dedicated to Povarskaya Sloboda.
Discover Moscow is a joint project of the Departments of IT, Culture, Cultural Heritage, Education and Science. The portal features over 230 routes around various districts of the city. The interactive guide contains photographs and descriptions of over 2.2 thousand buildings, 670 monuments, 350 museums, as well as information about 334 historical figures.
