Museums of Russia: Exhibition “Drawings and Watercolours of the 18th Century” from the collections of the Russian Museum opened in St. Petersburg

7 January 2023

The exhibition Drawings and Watercolours of the 18th Century has opened at Saint Michael’s (Engineers’) Castle of the Russian Museum (St. Petersburg).

The exposition includes about 80 graphic works from the collections of the Russian Museum. The exhibition offers visitors the rare opportunity to appreciate the most interesting and notable specimens of 18th-century drawing and watercolour from the museum’s extensive collection. Because of their fragility, these works are seldom presented for public viewing. This is the first part of a series of exhibitions planned by the Russian Museum and aimed at showcasing masterpieces of the Russian graphics of the 18th – 20th centuries.

The exhibition displays the most notable drawings of painters, sculptures, engravers, architects – Russian and European masters, who linked their creativity with Russia. Themes, genres and techniques of 18th-century drawing are presented at the exhibition in great diversity.

The exhibition also presents sketches for ceiling lights, stage artwork, quick caricature portraits, silhouettes cut out of black paper.

Graphic works are complemented by touch screens that introduce visitors in detail with drawings and watercolours of the 18th century, including those not showcased in the exposition.

The exhibition will run until March 27, 2023.
