History and Culture: Exhibition “Waiting for the Chimes to Strike” opened in the Museum of the History of the City of Kirillov in Vologda Region
The New Year exhibition Waiting for the Chimes to Strike has opened in the Museum of the History of the City of Kirillov (Vologda Region). The highlight of the exhibition is not only the clocks themselves, but also the time they show – all clocks are set to celebrate the New Year – the hands on the dials show 23:55.
The exhibition presents items from the collections of the Kirillo-Belozersky Museum-Reserve and the Dionisiy Frescoes Museum. Visitors will see clocks from the collections made of metal, ceramics and wood dated from the XIX-XX centuries.
The exhibition introduces visitors to diverse mechanical clocks: wall clocks, pendulum clocks, wristwatches, alarm clocks, table clocks, buffet clocks and walker clocks. In addition to clocks of the Soviet brands Pobeda, CLAVA, Mayak, clocks of foreign production, Junghans and Le Roi á Paris, are presented as well. Guests will have an opportunity to see “tank”, “commander’s”, “jubilee”, “general’s” watches and learn why they were called that way and to whom they belonged.
A special place among the exhibits is devoted to a clock with the image of Marshal of the USSR Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, which belonged to the Hero of the Soviet Union, a native of Kirillovsky District Alexander Vasilyevich Andreyev. The clock was presented to him in honour of the 50th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The museum received the exhibit as a gift from a relative of the hero – S. A. Andreyeva.
The exhibition will run until January 31, 2023.
