Memorable Dates of Russia: Exhibition “Unforgettable Heroes”, marking the 80th anniversary of the breakthrough of the siege of Leningrad, presented at the Victory Museum in Moscow
The exhibition Unforgettable Heroes, marking the 80th anniversary of the breakthrough of the siege of Leningrad, has opened in the Victory Museum (Moscow). School museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg present dozens of rarities – personal belongings of residents of the besieged city and participants in the breaking of the siege, as well as other battles of the Great Patriotic War.
The exposition features elements of weapons and uniforms of the defenders of Leningrad. There are also preserved everyday objects of Leningrad residents and front-line soldiers; they are exhibited as well. In addition, one has an opportunity to see the death medallion of the Red Army soldier Sergei Nikolayevich Rossokhin, who died on Nevsky Pyatachok, and the medal For the Defence of Leningrad.
The Baltic Fleet assisted the troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov Fronts in breaking through the land of the siege of Leningrad. The exhibition tells about the fate of submarines that fought in the Baltic, and, in particular, about one of the most famous ones – the Red Banner submarine S-13 and its commander, 3rd Rank Captain Alexander Ivanovich Marinesko. The exhibits include the tunic of 1st Rank Captain Konstantin Vasilenko, the order bars of Senior Red Army Officer Nikolai Afanasyevich Kot, a naval officer’s cap and a ribbon for the Baltic Fleet cap of the war period, numerous books about heroes-submariners written by Alexander Kron, and a badge with the certificate Crew Member of the Red Banner s. S-13 in the name of Alexander Marinesko.
Part of the exhibition tells about the fates of people who fought on different fronts – for example, about Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR (1956–1957), editor-in-chief of the Pravda newspaper (1952–1956), Major General Dmitry Shepilov. Visitors will see Shepilov’s tunic, his scientific works and memoirs, his adjutant’s field bag, and much more.
The exhibition was prepared by the partners of the Victory Museum, participants of the School Victory Museum program – the Museum “From Stalingrad to Vienna” of the Hero of the Russian Federation A. V. Solomatin School № 1103 in Moscow, the Museum “From the History of Submarines of the C-Type of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet” of the “Chance” School № 189 in St. Petersburg, and the Museum “Immortal Leningrad” of the St. Petersburg Gymnasium № 295.
