Memorable Dates of Russia: Ministry of Defence of Russia launched a multimedia section “Stalingrad: the Great Victory of the Great War”
The Ministry of Defence of Russia has launched a new multimedia historical and educational section Stalingrad: the Great Victory of the Great War, marking the 80th anniversary of the defeat of the Nazi troops near Stalingrad.
It features documents of the war years from the collections of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defence dedicated to the key stages of the Battle of Stalingrad – from the formation of the Stalingrad Front and the first dramatic pages of the defence of the city to the offensive operations of the red army.
In particular, the section displays the orders of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command (SVGK), People’s Commissar of Defence Joseph Stalin, including those written by him personally, combat reports from the front, descriptions of the feats of Stalingrad soldiers, German operational maps. The order of the Chief of the General Staff on the establishment of conditional surnames of representatives of the SVGK and front commanders in order to preserve official secrecy was published for the first time.
The publication of documents from the collections of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defence of Russia about the defeat of the Nazi troops near Stalingrad is aimed at protecting and defending historical truth, glorifying the heroic deeds of Soviet soldiers, and countering falsifications of history.
