International conferences: IFLA International Newspaper Conference 2010
Libraries the world over are facing the dual challenges of preserving the printed newspapers as part of the culture of countries, and responding to the changes that new technologies bring on to managing both printed and online (born digital) newspapers. Rapid advancements of digital technologies affect the various aspects relating to newspapers in libraries and archives such as acquisition, collection development, access, storage, preservation of newspapers and their contents, and interlibrary lending.
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) together with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts will hold IFLA International Newspaper Conference at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi (India) from 25th - 28th February 2010.
The purpose of this conference aims not only at the sharing of collective knowledge about how libraries can tackle these challenges but also to open up opportunities for libraries, librarians and associated industry players to interact with one another and work out suitable partnerships that will help to improve the provision of newspaper services at libraries.
The participants will discuss a wide range of problems. Among them are:
· Physical preservation of newspaper resources (hardcopies archives, microfilm archives etc.);
· Digital preservation of newspaper resources (digital text archives, e-paper archives, online web archives);
· Metadata standards, consistency and harmonization for both digitized newspapers and born digital newspapers;
· Marketing and promotion of newspaper library services;
· Resource sharing among newspaper libraries;
· Copyrights issues in newspaper libraries;
· Technical issues of preservation;
· Online newspapers etc.
