Memory of Russia: Orthodox memorial cross commemorates the Great Siberian Ice March
An action group from Krasnoyarsk krai has erected an Orthodox memorial cross on the bank of the river Kan in commemoration of the Great Siberian Ice March. In 1920 the White Russian Army under the commandment of lieutenant general Vladimir Kappel retreated from Krasnoyarsk.
The place for cross construction was chosen together with local historians. Many White Army soldiers froze to death when making their way across the ice river Kan, the general himself fell in the icebound river, caught pneumonia, and passed away in a few days, said the representative of the action group to “Interfax”.
A divine lite on the place of constructed cross and the consecration was carried out by Archpriest Dmitry Smirnov, Chairman of the Synodal Department of the Orthodox Church for Relations with Armed Forces and Other Law-Enforcement Agencies.
