Society and church: Unique icon in honor of events of the Great Patriotic War
The upcoming exhibition in Kaluga is going to unveil a unique icon, created by icon-painters of the St George Meshchovsk Monastery in Kaluga. The icon entitled “The Intercession of St George the Great Martyr and Conqueror – the Guardian Angel of Russia during the Terrible Trial 1941–1945” portrays dramatic events of the Great Patriotic War: liberation of Leningrad from the Siege, battles for Königsberg and Moscow, the Battle of Kursk, where the intercessions of the St George the Great Martyr and other saints helped lead the Russian troops to victory. The exhibition called “The Triumph of Good” will be mounted on May, 6 in the Kaluga Oblast Philharmonic building.
The exposition will display 50 works of modern artists, graphic artists and sculptors. “Twelve Good Works” project is entirely devoted to the image of St George. Over 60 Russian modern artists have worked on the project, launched 4 years ago. Ten exhibitions have been organized in Moscow. All funds raised by the exhibits went to the St George Meshchovsk Monastery in Kaluga for revival of the unique architectural complex, and in order to render support to the local children’s creative center. After the close of the exhibition in Kaluga all the pictures with image of St George will be sent to Meshchovsk.
