Russian language abroad: “Russkiy Mir” foundation expands its activities in Portugal

“Russkiy Mir” foundation is expanding its activities aimed at promotion of the Russian language and culture in Portugal. This European country which is famous for its rich history and traditions is a home for several thousands of Russian-speaking people who came from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and other former members of the Soviet Union. What is more, there are a lot of organizations of compatriots and several centers for Russian Studies in Portugal.

In the beginning of July the head of the “Russkiy Mir” foundation European programs Alexei Gromyko together with V. Shatalin, representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in Portugal, conducted negotiations on development of cooperation with the Dean of the University of Coimbra Faculty of Humanities Professor Carlos Ascenso André and pedagogue of the University V. Plyasov. On the same day Alexei Gromyko met with representatives of the Association of compatriots of Porto city – the second largest city of Portugal after Lisbon.

In the city of Rio Tinto, which borders on Porto, there is an educational center for Russian-speaking children. It is there that a project on creation of the first magazine in Russian language in Portugal is being developed.
