President of Russia: Russia and Norway sign a maritime border agreement

On September 15 2010 Norway and Russia signed a treaty which stipulates maritime borders in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean and brings 40-years long negotiations to an end. In presence of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg Foreign Affairs Ministers of both countries signed the agreement.

"Today we witnessed signing of the document of historical importance", - stressed President of Russia during the joint press conference with the Prime Minister of Norway. "We had been aspiring to reach this agreement for 40 years", - he reminded. "This is a long time, but this event should start a new page in bilateral relations", - underscored Dmitry Medvedev.

"This event is expected to improve general situation in the region, consolidate international and regional security, and serve more profound cooperation between Arctic states", - the President concluded.
