IT and Society: 80% of Russians will use broadband Internet by 2015

The Minister of Communications and Mass Media of Russia Igor Shchegolev announced that in 5 years broadband Internet would be available to 60-80% of Russian households, while by late 2010s the percentage will reach 90-95%.

As for today broadband Internet penetration in Russia tops 30%. Minister underscores that by 2015 this figure will increase by 2-2,7 times, whereas by 2020 — by 3-3,16 times. Global broadband Internet access coverage in Russia will be provided by 4G mobile networks (LTE technology), which will be deployed in the country in the future 10 years.

The broadband Internet access coverage will be growing side-by-side with PC expansion. In 2010 the general number of PCs used in Russia will grow up to 61,9 mil. (+18,4% to the 2009 level), by 2015 their number will increase by 1,8 times,  while by 2020 — 2,2 times as compared to 2009.
