Internet resources: The Year 2010 in Yandex search queries

The Russian search engine “Yandex” has released a report entitled “The Year 2010 in search queries”. It is called to show which events of the year 2010 generated keenest interest among Russian Internet surfers.

As a rule, the subject which dramatically attracted attention of users of the search, just the same loses its urgency — these are for instance holidays and most movie premieres. But some events, phenomena and objects are for long to stay — after a surge of interest users continue asking about them. A case in point, is the change of the address torrents.ru to rutracker.org. Long-life interest remains for new models of technology — in 2010 in life and in search appeared iPhone 4 and HTC Desire.

An event which aroused the keenest surge of interest among users became the terrorist acts in Moscow metro stations. It is followed by forest fires and smog in Russian cities in August. The 3rd and 4th places are shared by the Vancouver Olympiad in February and the anomalous heat wave in summer.

Every year International and public organizations announce the subject it will focus on. The year 2010 was declared among others the Teacher’s Year in Russia, the Year “Russia-France 2010” and International Year of Biodiversity.

The announcement about the year 2010 as a Teacher’s Year practically didn’t affect the number or subject of queries, relevant to school. The interest in teachers as usually rose dramatically only in September and October, before the Teacher’s Day. On the threshold of that holiday Russians asked about it about 20 000 times per day.

The Year of France in Russia attracted interest mainly among residents of Moscow. Residents of other regions showed interest in tours to France and the French language.

Biodiversity remains in search queries every year. As always in 2010 users asked Yandex about various inhabitants of the planet Earth. The most popular animal in Yandex search is a bear. Every day 18 000 queries are dedicated to it.

Among subjects which regularly arise interest are, first and foremost, holidays, sport competitions, international contests, beginning of a new school year and final exams. What is more, every year appear new movies, music, computer games — specific names change every time but interest to them remains undiminished.
