IT and Society: Microsoft releases a survey of consumer’s Web surfing habits

Microsoft Corp. has conducted an international research revealing insights into the Web surfing habits and online security of consumers from more than 20 European countries, Russia included, the Middle East and Africa.

According to the research, more than 69% of consumers cite security and viruses as their biggest concern when surfing online, followed by speed, ease of use and privacy. As for Russia, the figures are different, with 75% of respondents claiming speed is high on the list of priorities, especially when it comes to downloading “heavy” graphic apps., 63% of Net surfers name safety and only 36% of Russian users attach importance to privacy.

Surprisingly, the poll found an alarming amount of reckless behavior among consumers that is putting their safety at risk, with one in three admitting to downloading files they know are suspicious-looking.

More than a half of 14-to 17-year-olds were found to be the most reckless when browsing. Kids are known to be the most advanced users. Though they do recognize the importance of computer’s security, the survey reveals that they behave in a rather contradictory way.

60% of respondents worry about someone seeing the sites they’re visiting online, making privacy a major concern.

A staggering 92% of respondents believe that today’s websites could do better.

As to their wishes, 57% of users look forward to viewing films online with a high resolution, while 36% of Net surfers can’t wait to enjoy 3D films. In addition, the survey reads that more than a half of users (51%) are ready to accept slow downloading speeds for movies, 23% - for games and 24% - for their favorite music.
