Internet resources: Number of websites heads for the 300 million mark
The analytical company Netcraft has released a survey on the number of websites registered in March 2011. The survey thus reads that March 1 2011 saw 298 002 705 websites and personal blogs operating on the web, a growth of 13 million hostnames on the last month’s survey. Netcraft points out a steady growth which has been seen since July last year.
In March the web server Apache turned out to be the biggest contributor to this month’s growth, with an increase of 8,5 million hostnames. Most of its increase is due to AmeriNOC and Softlayer, with gains of 5.5 million and 1.2 million hostnames respectively. Large increases were also seen at both Leaseweb and Hetzner Online.
Nginx gained 1.2 mil. names. Small gains were seen by both Microsoft and Google – 560 000 and 205 000 respectively. The web server to see a loss in the number of hostnames in March became Lighttpd, which experienced a drop of 157 000 hostnames.
