IT and Society: Ru-net switches to IPv6
Considering the world’s problem of IPv4 address exhaustion, Reg.ru, Russia’s Domain Name Registry, has announced that it would enable its customers to switch to IPv6, Internet Protocol version 6, in “.РФ”, .RU, .SU national domains.
At the beginning of February 2011, Miami, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) allocated the last remaining blocks of IPv4 addresses to five Regional Internet Registries: AfriNIC (Africa), ARIN (the USA and Canada), APNIC (Asia Pacific), LACNIC (Latin America) and RIPE NCC (Europe, Middle East and Central Asia).
The Technical Center of Internet (TCI) which is responsible for an uninterrupted operation of domain name registration in Russia, launched IPv6 support for .РФ, .RU, .SU domains. Reg.ru supported TCI’s initiative and offered its clients an opportunity to transit to IPv6 addresses for domains registered in .РФ, .RU and .SU zones. “Transition to IPv6 – is a significant event for the whole World Web, and we are ready to concentrate our efforts in order to ensure a step-by-step and smooth transition to a new protocol for company’s clients and Russian Internet users”, said Reg.ru’s CEO Alexei Korolyuk.
