27 August 2011

The Museum of Uyezd (District) Town in Valdai (Novgorod Region) is holding an exhibition called “Like bright stars that shine upon us…” that familiarizes visitors with images of saints, which were greatly revered by ancient Novgorodians.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. The first one is dedicated to Christian saints, which have been revered since old times - prophets, apostles, prelates, martyrs. The second section shows the establishment of local pantheon of famous Novgorod miracle-workers.

A separate group includes icons which depict Novgorod church hierarchs and Reverends against the background of monasteries founded by them. These icons are the most important pictorial sources which represent architectural ensembles of the major cloisters of ancient Novgorod, many of which have not survived till present days.

The exhibition features 33 icons, an epigonation and 15 copper castings from 16th – to early 20th cc. from the collection of Novgorod Museum.
