History of Russia: International Conference “P. A. Stolypin and historical experience of reforms in Russia” runs in Moscow

September 28-30 2011 Alexander Solzhenitsyn House of Russian Abroad is holding the International theoretical and practical conference “P. A. Stolypin and historical experience of reforms in Russia.  Centenary of P. A. Stolypin’s death”.

The conference has brought together leading Russian and foreign scholars, P. A. Stolypin’s descendants, representatives of the supreme legislative and executive power of Russia, Moscow government, Moscow City Duma, public organizations, politicians and political scientists.

The conference addresses the following themes:

- P. A. Stolypin as a statesman. P. A. Stolypin and the State Duma. The historical experience of parliamentarianism and self-government in Russia.

- P. A. Stolypin and agrarian reforms in Russia.

- P. A. Stolypin: personality, milieu.

- P. A. Stolypin and Russian emigration.

The conference presents reports which cast light on relationship of the government, headed by P. A. Stolypin, and liberal and conservative circles; development of Stolypin’s ideas on Russia’s modernization in conservative projects of Russian Abroad; the governmental policy in Baltic states and in Finland; P. A. Stolypin and the fiscal policy of the government in Third State Duma (1907-1912); regional aspects of reformative activities of the government with P. A. Stolypin at its head; the problem of correlation of continuity and innovations in P. A. Stolypin’s agrarian policy and other crucial aspects of Russia’s modernization program in early 20th century.

“P. A. Stolypin: pages of activities as a statesman. Centenary of death” exhibition is timed to the launch of the conference.

Participants of the conference inauguration saw the newsreel fragments from the collection of the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive.

Sept. 30 will see the finale of the conference with a tour to Serednikovo estate – the estate of Stolypin family.
