Internet resources: Number of websites hits 644 million

Netcraft web monitoring company has announced that in the March 2012 survey it received responses from 644 275 754 sites and blogs, giving a rise of 31.4 million hostnames since last month.

Apache continued to gain hostnames this month with a growth of 22.5 million and was able to increase its market share by a third of a percentage point. In January Apache showed a dramatic growth too. nginx had another good month and experienced an increase of 4.7 million hostnames or 7.82%. With all other major web server vendors showing higher growth than Microsoft's 761 000 increase, Microsoft recorded a drop in market share of half a percentage point.
