The Presidential Library: New acquisitions

Presidential Library holdings were replenished with new documents, which make part of a mini-collection Russia - Moldova: to the history of relationship and Tambov Region: pages of history.

Russia - Moldova: the history of the relationship

The presented statistical data, studies, essays introduce the geography, administrative and territorial division, the legal system and the ethnography of Moldova in the period when it was a part of the same state as Russia.

The Brief statistical description of the Transnistria Region annexed to Russia under the peace treaty concluded with the Ottoman Porte in Bucharest in 1812 (St. Petersburg, 1813) by archpriest P. S. Kunitsky, provides information about the region's geographical position, climate, mineral resources, industry, population, religion, rights and laws, science and art at the time of its annexation to the Russian Empire.

Complete systematic collection including local Bessarabia laws of Harmenopoulos and Donici, a Charter of Mavrocordatos and a manual on marriages, with subsequent statutes and explanations on the decisions of the Civil Cassation Department, the General Assembly and the Governing Senate United Office upon the collected works of R. Kohmansky and M. Szymanovsky are reflected in the Local Laws of Bessarabia (St. Petersburg, 1904).

In addition, a mini-collection includes digital copies of archival documents held by the RSHA, On the authorization of the nobility of Kishenev and Orhei counties, Bessarabia Province, to make individual assemblies in each of them (March 20 - May 21, 1891), and the Grant of loans from the general food equity for organization of public works for unemployed population of the cities of Bender and Kishinev of Bessarabia region (13-18 February 1906).

L. S. Berg’s Population of Bessarabia (Pg. 1923), published under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Sciences, reveals the ethnographic composition and quantity, especially of the rural population as of 1907 (there were newer data at the time of the book’s publication.) An ethnographic map of Bessarabia is applied to it.

The list of publications telling of the historical past of Bessarabia and the formation of the Moldavian Union SSR (pp. 59-66) is a part of the Literature Index New Soviet republics and regions (Moscow, 1940). It includes books and articles, published in the period from September 1939 to September 1940.

Basic information about the administrative-territorial structure of the Moldavian SSR as of January 1, 1955 is provided by the Directory (Kishinev, 1955), which was the first publication of the kind issued for the Moldavian SSR.

Tambov Region: pages of history

The presented studies, statistics and archival documents describe the administrative, economic, demographic, educational and religious position of the Tambov Province in the late 19th - early 20th century.

The memorial book of the Tambov province of 1879 (Tambov, 1879) contains statistical data on the population of the province, information on agriculture, animal husbandry, the factory industry, the charities of Tambov, as well as reference information about the personnel of the Tambov Provincial Statistics Committee, a list of districts of the Tambov Province and report card of charges levied on burghers and peasants.

P. I. Piskaryov’s Collection of materials for the history of the Western area of the Tambov Province and diocese (Tambov, 1878) features more than 150 documents that were at the time of publication the only source for studying the history of Kozlovka, Lipetsk and Lebedyansk counties, their first settlers, the state of cities and towns, the service class, the rural population, the clergy, churches, monasteries, manor houses, etc.

N. Molchanov’s Historical and statistical description of the Tambov Ascension Nunnery (Tambov, 1883) tells about the location of the monastery, its organization, history, government, prioress, the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Sorrow, and the miracles associated with it, etc.

The mini-collection also includes archival documents and published materials of the central and local government bodies- the Council of Ministers: On the anti-government activities of the President of the Tambov District Court, State Councilor, Pomerantsev (January 3, 1906) and On the allotment of funds  to theTambov Provincial Committee for the national sobriety for the completion of the Public House in the city of Tambov (January 11 - March 3, 1910); the Department of Laws: On regulations of Tambov Alexandrinsky Institute for noble maidens (1843) and On the establishment in the city of Tambov of Teachers' Institute for training of teachers for primary public schools (1870); the Saratov Province Zemstvo: Journals of the Saratov Province Zemstvo Emergency Assembly on 5, 6 and 7 August 1868 and a concession for the railway line from Tambov to Saratov ratified October 17, 1868. (1869).
